Otto Link Florida Small USA 6 (now 7*) Metal Tenor Mouthpiece (refaced by Freddie Gregory)
I bought this mouthpiece on eBay on July 8, 2006, for 450$. Every player I ever met wanted to try a good Florida Link once in his
life, I guess. So, I got this one. Really great piece, worthy of its reputation.
This is a middle period Florida, having USA stamped on the shank, but #6 opening in small font on the
side. It came in perfect playing condition, but #6 was a bit close for me.
So, I sent it to Freddie Gregory to have it refaced. He opened it to 7* and made it a great playing piece. Freddie's work is known
in the sax world so no need to spend time explaining it.
The mouthpiece now does have what people call modern Link sound ...
It does have some pitting due to the age, superfacial scratches but nothing that affects how it plays.
I, however, lean towards a darker sound, so I never really played it for any significant amount of time and it has been sitting in
my drawer for years...
I chose Freddie as he did a marvelous job on the Tone Master piece that I
have. Unlike on that piece, here Freddie did not put his initials on the side. However, please see below my Western Union slip where
I am actually sending him 130 eur (at the time) for refacing (185$ including reverse shipping charges), his return address and his
famous black tube box where he packed the mouthpiece for shipping.
Here is what Theo says about these:
"Around 1960, a stamp reading USA was placed on the shank opposite the SUPER TONE MASTER marking. They had the step baffle like
the later "no USA" models. They all had Rhodium (nickel) plating underneath the gold plating. As gold does not stick to Rhodium
very well, it is very common for the gold to wear off from normal handling showing the Rhodium plating underneath."
Original add
This is a vintage Florida Otto link tenor saxophone mouthpiece with a #6 on the side and a usa that plays absolutely great! It is in completely original unaltered condition with perfect rails. It has a very small ding on the tip, but does not affect it's playability in any way. You can get just about any type of sound you like on this mouthpiece, from a big fat subtone with ease down low, to an effortless altisimo. This is a very clear focused sounding link with a nice amount of edge, not stuffy at all. Comes with cap and ligature. Buyer pays shipping
