Otto Link Tone Master Metal Tenor Mouthpiece 7* (refaced by Johannes Gerber)
I bought this mouthpiece on eBay on February 14, 2007. The first idea was to get a backup for my main piece at the time, another
Tone Master refaced by Freddie Gregory. I bought it from
a player from Vancouver, Canada, who worked with Johannes Gerber to have it
refaced to 7* opening. Please, see his original add description below. I can only second his opinion and description.
As I really kept this one as a backup, I pulled it out from a drawer several times over the years considering selling it but changed
my mind every time I gave it a try. Beautiful vintage Link sound, though different from my other Tone Master Link.
Here is what Theo says about these:
"TONE MASTER" METAL:
Otto Link started putting a ridge on top of their metal mouthpieces to make it easier to center the ligature. These mouthpieces
were made in New York and had a bit more projection then the older models. They had very long and deep facings (like the older
models), playing better with small tip openings. They did, on rare occasions, make larger tip openings, such as a 7 or 8. However,
these mouthpieces still retained the very long and deep facing, which curtailed their responsiveness. The TONE MASTER models had
silver under gold plating. The serial numbers were on the side and the tip openings were stamped on the table. The ligatures
truly improved at this point. The reed contact plates were much thinner, allowing the reed to vibrate more freely. The top of the
thumb screw now read, OTTO LINK.
The first models had four smaller digits for a serial number. The later models had three larger digits.
Some of the musicians that used the Otto Link "TONE MASTER" included:
Ben Webster (tenor)
Lester Young (tenor)
Coleman Hawkins (tenor)
Georgie Auld (tenor)
Buddy Tate (tenor)
Charlie Barnett (tenor)
Benny Carter (alto)
Vido Muso (tenor)
Finally, here is Johannes playing on it - mp3 I got from the seller:
Original add
You are bidding on a phenomenal Otto Link Tone Master 7* tenor mouthpiece, Serial # V31. I had this piece opened up by Johannes Gerber, perhaps the world's greatest mouthpiece maker and technician. Jo opened up the piece, fine tuned the rails tip and baffle. If you have never worked with Jo, let me tell you the routine. When he starts working on your mouthpiece, he play tests it after every tiny tweak. He is a perfectionist, and relentlessly pursues tonal quality and ease of playing. Then he emails you about a minute of him playing the mouthpiece to see if you like the sound he is getting from your piece. Nobody...absolutely nobody spends as much time in making a mouthpiece absolutely perfect. So that's what you have here. Check out his website http://www.jgerber.com/ Qualified bidders can email me and I will attach Jo's mp3 he sent me after the last adjustments. here is Jo's comment " has got a small rollover baffle now... very nice sounding piece, very good player... " The tip opening is .105, with a very nice baffle and of course Otto Link's original very large chamber. As the pictures show, the rails are perfect too. I have had well over a hundred Link mouthpieces, all models, and this is without a doubt one of the best ever. I am a professional player, and will answer any questions you may have.
